Located around 12km north-east of Melbourne CDB, Heidelberg has some fantastic cafés well worth the visit. Here’s our three favourites on Burgundy Street.
The Train Yard, 184 Burgundy St, Heidelberg VIC
Colleagues rave about this venue as a place for an end of week drink (they have live music on a Friday night) and it is also a great lunch venue, but at the moment The Train Yard is my go to for breakfast. Their house-made Bircher is a great way to kick-start the day but you also can’t beat the panko eggs (worth it for mayonnaise – another house-made delight). The atmosphere is great and staff are always friendly & efficient.
Cafe Matto, 136 Burgundy St, Heidelberg VIC
The food is always good at this venue, and the welcome and service you get from Peter and Catrina is always wonderful. Start the day with The Hangover, grab a wrap for lunch then finish the day with a risotto dinner. Café Matto has a lovely atmosphere and is a great place to relax before and after work. It can cater to small and large groups and the menu provides enough variety to please everyone.
Scintilla Café, 131 Burgundy St, Heidelberg VIC
This is a great venue for the nice weather as it has an outdoor area, but the menu will keep you coming back all year round. There are those who say Scintilla serves the best coffee in Melbourne, and it certainly is a popular place. The service is excellent and all the staff happily make recommendations on the most popular menu items. Scintilla is always light and bright and a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of a busy life.
